To understand where WA is today, it helps to look back at where it started. The platform has changed a lot over the years, and its evolution is an interesting story.
I’ve been a member of Wealthy Affiliate since 2019, and I’ve seen it grow and transform firsthand. From older training and a simpler interface to brand new tools and a modern platform, it’s come a long way since I first joined.

The Early Years
Wealthy Affiliate was founded in 2005 by Kyle Loudon and Carson Lim, two affiliate marketers with years of experience that wanted to help others succeed online.
It began as a simple keyword list service where members would receive a fresh list of keywords each month in exchange for a small fee of $29.99.
After reaching 50 members, a forum was added as a way for members to communicate with each other. This is now known as the Wealthy Affiliate community.
Early Training
In early 2006, basic training was added to the platform. It was short, basic and text based and was focused on using keyword lists for SEO and traffic.
Once the training was added, the price of the platform increased to $39.99 per month. Later the same year, Wealthy Affiliate introduced a feature called WA spaces.
This feature gave members their own profile space on the platform which later became the modern WA profile system.
As the platform continued to grow, Kyle and Carson began expanding beyond keyword lists and training, and Wealthy Affiliate became more than just a keyword service.
Birth Of SiteRubix Web Hosting
In early 2007, Wealthy Affiliate developed their own hosting infrastructure and added SiteRubix, the website builder which is still used today.
This allowed members to build and host their own websites within the platform and WA web hosting was born.
It began with only 2 servers, but more were added as time went by and the hosting became more reliable.
Getting Ahead Of The Competition
In 2008, Wealthy Affiliate underwent further development to increase the reliability of all existing features.
The following year in 2009, the premium membership was introduced, and the price was increased to $47 or $97 per month depending on which membership level you chose.
In 2010, Wealthy Affiliate updated and relaunched WA blogs and updated the rest of the platform to keep aligned with industry standards.
It was during this time when Wealthy Affiliate gained a lot of traction, made its mark on the make money online industry and got ahead of its competition by having multiple online business tools in one place.
By the end of the 2005-2010 period, Wealthy Affiliate had transformed from a simple keyword list service into a growing online business platform with training, hosting, and a small but active community.
The Growth Phase
As Wealthy Affiliate continued to develop beyond its early years, it started to grow into a solid online business platform.
This was due to the introduction of more organized training, beginner-friendly content and a clearer path for new members.

The updates began in 2011 with the introduction of live chat. The live chat allowed all members to talk to each other in real time.
Kyle and Carson also became involved in the live chat daily, just like they still are today.
The community exploded with activity, a lot more discussions opened up and more support was available.
In 2012, Wealthy Affiliate introduced a rewards system that rewarded members for likes, comments and training they provide.
This increased activity even further and it later became known as the ambassador program that still exists today.
New Features & Tools
One month later, a keyword research tool called Jaaxy was released. This allowed members to research keywords, create their own keyword list and see what competitors were ranking for.
This was followed by the introduction of the notification system which allows members to stay up to date with what’s happening on Wealthy Affiliate.
Later in the same year, the free starter membership was launched and a new training course focused on social media engagement was added.
In 2013, Wealthy Affiliate launched classrooms which provided training and discussions in multiple aspects of online business.
This helped a lot with organisation and provided an easy way for members to find what they were looking for.
Later in the same year, private messaging was introduced which allowed upgraded members to send private messages to each other and to Kyle and Carson.
This feature still exists today and has since become a big part of the platform.
Security & Design Updates
In 2014, a bookmarking system was introduced that allowed members to bookmark posts within the platform for future reference.
Later that year, another training course was added focused on achieving maximum success through content creation, which completed WA’s online entrepreneur certification training.
In 2015, a major security update was released for SiteRubix hosting which provided additional security for all websites hosted on the platform.
After that, the design of live chat was updated to be more user friendly, and the processing power of Wealthy Affiliate was increased to manage the large number of new members.
In the middle of the same year, Site Comments was introduced along with the community credit system.
This allowed members to offer comments on other members’ websites and receive comments on their own websites in return.
Taking Off To New Heights
With all of these updates, Wealthy Affiliate grew sustainably and became a large platform with a very active community.
Looking back at the older versions of the platform, it’s clear to see how much has changed during this period. Many older members say this is when Wealthy Affiliate really started to take off.
By the mid‑2010s, Wealthy Affiliate had grown into a full online business platform with structured training, reliable hosting, and a thriving community. This set the stage for the modern version of WA that would emerge in the years ahead.
The Modern Era
Wealthy Affiliate continued to grow and expand, eventually becoming a modern online business platform with everything you need to build an online business in one place.
From a huge redesign to new tools and major upgrades, Wealthy Affiliate became a huge platform with over 2 million members.
During this time, Wealthy Affiliate went through multiple updates and overhauls which made it the successful platform it is today.
Design Overhaul & Hosting Updates
The overhauls began in 2016 with a major design overhaul. This introduced a brand-new interface, a cleaner design, better navigation and a more modern layout.
Following the design overhaul, SiteDomains was introduced which allowed members to purchase domains within Wealthy Affiliate.
This was followed by the ability to transfer domains to WA for use on their hosting.
Later in the same year, hosting was updated to include spam protection and free SSL certificates for all websites hosted on the platform.
SiteContent Introduction
In 2017, SiteContent was introduced which is WA’s internal writing system that allows you to write and publish content directly to your websites.
It also included a spelling and grammar checker, templates and word count goals. This helped beginners write content more easily and understand how to create helpful content.
SiteContent is still a popular and core part of the platform today.
Major Hosting Upgrades & Jaaxy Integration
This was followed by major hosting upgrades from 2017 to 2019. During this time, SiteRubix hosting was transformed with faster servers which resulted in faster loading times and better uptime.
Security was also improved, and daily automated backups began. The SiteSpeed feature which focused on caching and performance optimization was also added at the same time.
All of these upgrades made Wealthy Affiliate’s hosting better, and it began competing with other premium hosting companies.
At the same time, Jaaxy was fully integrated into Wealthy Affiliate meaning it became part of the platform and members no longer needed a separate login.
This made things much easier and keyword research became a core part of the platform.
Updated Training & Live Classes
Throughout 2017 to 2020, all the training was upgraded including the OEC training and affiliate bootcamp.
Training was made more beginner-friendly and covered all aspects of starting and growing an online business.
Weekly live classes with expert members also began and video training was introduced.
This changed the game for members and the platform alike, making learning faster and much easier at the same time.
As updates rolled out and the platform grew, the community became more active than ever before.
Members became excited, discussions took off and help became available 24/7.
As a result, Wealthy Affiliate became known for its supportive community.
Beyond 2020
Beyond 2020, Wealthy Affiliate went through several major upgrades that completely changed the platform for the better.
This includes the introduction of Premium Plus and Premium Plus Accelerated memberships, a completely new user interface and AI-powered tools.
During this time, hosting was also improved and made faster, more secure and up to date with industry standards.
In 2025, a completely new core training and affiliate bootcamp was introduced, along with an overhauled Jaaxy research platform, and a new ambassador program that allows members to earn money by being active on the platform.

When I first joined Wealthy Affiliate in 2019 it was completely different to what it is today.
A lot changed over the years, and I have witnessed a lot of changes during time on the platform.

When I first joined the platform, it had an old user interface. It was plain and basic, but it worked at the time.
